Toll collection is a part of government activity which includes collecting taxes from the road users. Manual Toll collection activities lead to long line on the highway. Also, this process creates congestion on the roads and thus more pollution from the vehicles.
Electronic Toll Collection system allows electronically charging a toll to an established customer account. ETC allows vehicles to pass through a toll without stopping or requiring any action by the driver. The automatic toll collection requires an account with the concerned government authority. RFID Tag with a chip in it is fixed on the windshield of the vehicle and enables a customer to make the toll payment directly from the account linked to the tag.
Why Electronic Toll Collection?
– Faster & efficient movement of vehicles
– Helps in monitoring every vehicle which enters and exits.
– Will reduce the congestion on the road.
– Using RFID Tags for Toll collection is a part of Smart City projects as well
How RFID Technology works?
Radio frequency Identification Technology is a step initiated by the government to reduce traffic on the roads. RFID systems consist of three components: an RFID tag or smart label (FASTag), RFID reader (fixed at the gateway), and an antenna. The RFID system uses a reader to activate the tag on windshield of each vehicle, and as the tag comes under the electromagnetic waves of the transponder it transfers the data through the reader to the system. Every RFID Tag is assigned a unique identification number with data of the vehicle stored on the tag. The reader reads the tag and automatically deducts a certain amount of money from the account linked to the Vehicle and let the vehicle pass through the toll gate.
RFID Tag offers the convenience of cashless payment along with benefits like – savings on fuel and time as the customer does not have to stop at the toll plaza. It has helped to reduce congestion on the toll.
The RFID Tag used for electronic toll collection not only automates the payment process at the toll but also-
– Vehicle Theft Detection
– Signal Breaking Avoidance
– Tracking over Speeding Vehicle
To conclude, Electronic Toll Collection is an RFID base toll collection system where every vehicle owns a unique identification number linked to a tag. When the vehicle enters the electromagnetic waves of the reader it automatically deducts certain amount from the linked prepaid account and opens the gate for the vehicle to pass.
This system includes Electronic toll collection (ETC) system, real time toll collection and anti-theft solution system. This reduces the manual labour and delays that often occur on roads. Electronic toll collection system using RFID is an effective measure to reduce management costs and fees, at the same time, greatly reduce noise and pollution of toll station.
